What does it mean to be selected for verification for financial aid?

25 Oct, 2013

The Department of Education selects some FAFSA applicants for a process called verification.  The verification process will ensure that your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is based on the correct information.  The EFC is the amount of money that the family is expected to contribute toward educational expenses from resources other than financial aid and is based on ability to pay.  Factors used to determine a family’s contributions include: the previous year’s adjusted gross income, size of family, and the number of individuals in the family attending college at least half time.  The EFC for dependent and independent students is determined differently.  The EFC is calculated using the information provided on the FAFSA, and any corrections that need to be made are done by the school through verification.  Verification must be complete before aid eligibility can be confirmed.
